Mobile Device Security in 2019

The average American spends 5.4 hours per day on their phone. From social media to an endless stream of emails, our nations reliance on mobile technology has proven to be the way of the future. But lets be clear – our shift in mobility has posed an unnoticeable threat. Mobile device security is something that society has seemed to overlook. Just a few years ago, Verizon Wireless had security breach which exposed information on 14 million customers – some of which was personal data.

So what can we do about mobile device security? Has your company implemented any policies and procedures surrounding the issue?

Here are a few tips to take into consideration when discussing issues surrounding mobile device management:

  • Backup your mobile devices on a regular basis. The last thing you want to do is run into a situation where data is only kept on your phone, and you lose permanent access to those files. An automated policy that stores data securely is a must have so any potential loss of data is mitigated.
  • When travelling remotely, be sure to avoid connecting to public wifi networks if possible. These places do not typically have accurate security protocols and hackers can easily to gain access to sensitive data sent across that system.
  • Ensure that only device owners can get into their mobile devices by implementing biometric or multifactor authentication policies. Biometric is a simple process where these devices can record fingerprints or run facial recognition scans of specific individuals to unlock access to their devices. Multifactor authentication is a method that requires two or more separate credentials to gain access to a device. By implementing these practices on a regular basis, companies will see a decline in security breaches.
  • Encrypt all data on devices as well as when data is in transit from one location to another. Hackers will often try to bypass the encryption from a different angle, but failed attempts will often end in a loss of interest.
